Qué es RICS?

RICS is an independent professional body originally established in the UK by Royal Charter. Since 1868, RICS has been committed to setting and upholding the highest standards of excellence and integrity – providing impartial, authoritative advice on key issues affecting businesses and society. There are currently over 100,000 members in 146 countries worldwide including over 500 members in Spain.

The RICS is the foremost organization for property professionals in the world, internationally renowned for the high professional and ethical standards of the organization and its members. It is an organization with regional offices located throughout the world and sets education and training standards, along with the criteria for membership. The RICS serves a very important role in protecting consumers with strict codes of practice to be adhered by its members and also advises governments and business.

Members of RICS are:

  • Strictly regulated by RICS and adhere to a well-proven code of conduct.
  • Required to hold Professional Indemnity insurance.
  • Familiar with the different legislation and practices of the country in question.
  • Required to maintain themselves up-to-date through RICS Continuous Professional Development Regulations.

Members of the RICS are qualified and experienced professionals offering independent and impartial advice. They can be identified by the letters after their name MRICS or FRICS. Do not be confused or deceived by any other ‘surveyor’ who purports to be a Chartered Surveyor. Unfortunately there have been cases in Spain of individuals ‘passing off’ as Chartered Surveyors, particularly with the growth in internet business. If you are in any doubt please visit the website www.rics.org and use the ‘find a surveyor’ service or contact the country manager at ricsespana@rics.org.

There is a diverse range of expertise within Chartered Surveying Firms, who are able to offer expert advice in all matters relating to property and construction. Should a particular firm be unable to offer the specific service required by a client it is likely that they can assist the client to find a firm with the required expertise. Alternatively it is possible to contact the RICS regional manager for Iberia, Eulalia Pensado at ricsespana@rics.org for further advice.
